LOCAL BUSINESS

Who does business in San Francisco

San Francisco County counted 33,378 business locations in 2023, down 135 from 33,513. The count dipped 0.4%, and the sector table is more uneven than that single figure suggests.

  1. Professional services7,22022%
  2. Restaurants and hospitality4,22113%
  3. Health care3,62011%
  4. Retail stores2,9089%

Professional services makes up 21.6% of locations against 14.0% across California, with 7,220 locations, though it lost 83. Media and technology holds 5.8% against 2.7% and added 76. For that group we offer web apps and dashboards.

Restaurants and hospitality holds 12.6% of locations against 9.3% for the state and added 13. Health care added 158 locations, up 4.6%.

Finance and insurance fell 107, down 4.7%, to 2,186. Transportation and warehousing grew fastest of all, from 374 to 392. 55% of locations have fewer than five employees.

LOCAL INSIGHT

San Francisco is 23 neighborhoods, and downtown is still reopening

The city's tourism bureau lists 23 neighborhoods, from Union Square and the Financial District to the Mission, Dogpatch, Bayview and the Richmond. It says Bayview alone has 35,000 residents, and that Michelin awarded 39 stars to 25 restaurants. The Office of Economic and Workforce Development supports neighborhood business corridors with grants, loans and free technical help, and it runs a Shop Dine SF program. Customers search for a place in their own neighborhood, so each corner of the city is its own small market.

Downtown is the other story. The San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, which has served the city for 175 years, tracks a Downtown Economic Indicators dashboard that it announced in 2023. On October 13, 2026, the Mayor said major events, including Fleet Week, had passed $1 billion in economic impact, and on October 8 the city welcomed Uniqlo back downtown with a street festival. The city also lets bars, restaurants, wineries and breweries sell drinks to go in designated entertainment zones. Events bring visitors for a few days, so a business needs to be easy to find in the moment.

Rankwyre builds websites for San Francisco shops, restaurants and studios and manages Google Maps and local listings by neighborhood, so a café in the Mission and one in the Richmond each appear for their own streets.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with San Francisco businesses.

There are four stages, and the first one ends with a price in your inbox.

  1. Talk, then see the cost.

One short call about the business, followed by a written scope and price. Starting is your call after that.

  2. Build it in the open.

Drafts arrive as we go, with a preview link, so you can react to real pages and not descriptions.

  3. Aim at "web design agency san francisco".

Business Profile setup, local listings and service-area pages follow, planned around searches like "web design agency san francisco".

  4. Launch plus ongoing care.

Your site goes live with hosting and updates included, and we keep helping after the launch.

BEFORE YOU ASK

Questions from San Francisco businesses

How concentrated is San Francisco County in professional services?

Professional services makes up 21.6% of locations, against 14.0% for California. It counts 7,220 locations, which is the biggest sector here, though it lost 83 in a year. Restaurants and hospitality comes next at 4,221.

Which other California cities have a Rankwyre page?

San Jose, Sacramento and Los Angeles each have one. We work with businesses anywhere in the US, though, so a page isn't required. Web apps start at $1,000 one time, quoted in writing.

Does a San Francisco restaurant need a full website, or is Google Maps enough?

A website gives your menu, hours and booking links a home that you control, and local listings help people find it. Websites start at $399 a month plus a $299 setup and launch in about 7 days. Hosting, SSL and maintenance are included.
