LOCAL INSIGHT

Portland small businesses are working through a slow downtown recovery

Prosper Portland's 2025 Insights and Indicators report says employment in the Central City fell 9% from 2019 to 2024, with small businesses hit hardest. Office and retail vacancy there rose from 10% in 2017 to 38% in the second quarter of 2025, and employment across the city declined in both 2023 and 2024. A shop or service firm that once counted on downtown foot traffic now has to be found some other way, so its website and Google listing carry more of the load.

The big employers sit around the core. Greater Portland Inc.'s list, updated in March 2026, puts OHSU first at 20,882 regional employees, followed by Providence Health & Services at 19,221, Intel at 17,600 and Legacy Health at 14,000. OHSU's own 2024 economic report says its operations support 53,500 jobs in Oregon. Growth is slow, though. Business Oregon reports the state grew just 0.33% in 2025, and the Portland metro area grew more slowly than much of the state. A company selling into that market is chasing customers who are not arriving in large numbers, which makes ranking well in local search worth the effort.

For a Portland business we build the website and set up the Google Maps and local listings together, so a contractor or clinic that serves the OHSU, Providence and Legacy workforce shows up with correct hours, services and service areas.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with Portland businesses.

For a Portland business the project runs in four parts, and the price is settled before the first of them.

  1. First, the numbers.

On a short call we cover the goal and the scope, then put the price in writing. You can walk away at that point without owing anything.

  2. Sketches to finished pages.

We build your site in drafts and share a preview along the way, so you can steer it as it forms.

  3. Be easy to find.

Your Google Business Profile, local listings and service-area pages get set up, using phrases like "website optimization portland" as a guide.

  4. Handover and care.

Launch day includes hosting and updates, and after it you can still get help. Small edits don't turn into new projects.
