LOCAL INSIGHT

California's population fell in 2025 after three years of gains

California's population fell 0.14 percent to 39,593,000 on January 1, 2026, the first drop after three years of gains, according to the state Department of Finance. Los Angeles County lost 64,000 people, partly from the Eaton and Palisades fires, while Placer County grew fastest at 1.39 percent. The ten largest counties hold 72 percent of residents. Counties range from about 1,180 residents in Alpine to 9.8 million in Los Angeles, so a business should write for the county it serves.

The U.S. Small Business Administration counts 4.3 million small businesses in California, 837,834 with employees, and 1,062,720 businesses owned by Hispanic residents. Professional, scientific and technical services leads at 703,133 firms. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists dozens of metro areas, from San Jose and San Francisco to Fresno and Redding. Education and health services is the largest job sector at 3.64 million jobs in August 2026 (preliminary). Population gains were mostly in the Central Valley and the Inland Empire.

Rankwyre builds websites and runs SEO for California businesses remotely, with pricing that is identical in every state.
