San Diego businesses sit between the bay, the base and the border
The San Diego Regional EDC reports 1.6 million regional jobs, a $266.9 billion gross regional product and more than 3.2 million people for 2024. It says total nonfarm employment rose by 16,200 from June 2025 to June 2026, led by health care and by leisure and hospitality. The EDC also says defense related spending accounts for about 20 percent of gross regional product, that the region has 4,429 manufacturing establishments, and that it sits next to the busiest land port of entry in the Western Hemisphere. Local customers include a large military community and many visitors.
The Port of San Diego manages 34 miles of bay waterfront across five member cities: Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego. It reports 71,000 regional jobs and a $13.8 billion regional impact, a 535 acre Chula Vista Bayfront redevelopment, and a National City terminal that processes more than 400,000 vehicles a year. The City of San Diego lists business districts, a storefront improvement program and a foreign trade zone, and announced in October 2026 that it will take over management of Balboa Park's Starlight Bowl.
