LOCAL INSIGHT
Philadelphia's jobs cluster in Center City and the eds and meds sector
The City Controller's September 2025 report says education and health care now lead Philadelphia's employment, with the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Temple University Hospital among the largest employers. The federal government, the city, the school district, SEPTA and American Airlines also appear. Population has held near 1.57 million for a decade, and the city had 29,460 small businesses of 99 employees or fewer in 2023, up 7.5% over ten years.
Center City District's April 2026 report says Greater Center City holds 309,000 jobs, 42% of the city's total. With University City it holds 53% of citywide jobs on 8% of the land. Greater Center City has 210,710 residents, and retail occupancy there reached 84%. The report notes that the city recorded its most jobs since 1980 last year and expects visitors in 2026 for the nation's 250th birthday, the FIFA World Cup and the MLB All Star Game. With that many small businesses packed into dense blocks, competition happens street by street.
Rankwyre helps Philadelphia businesses stand out with Google Maps and local listings and websites built around the area a shop actually serves, whether Center City or University City.
