LOCAL INSIGHT
Washington's small businesses carry half the District's employees
The U.S. Small Business Administration's 2026 profile of the District counts 17,536 small businesses with employees, which is 92.1 percent of district employers. Those firms employ 259,181 people, or 49.1 percent of district employees. Competition for local search in the District is mostly small firm against small firm, so basic things like a clear service page and a correct listing decide who gets the inquiry.
The District's Office of the Chief Financial Officer reported in January 2026 that total jobs fell from 768.7 thousand in January 2025 to 739.2 thousand in November 2025. Federal jobs dropped from 192.8 thousand to 169.0 thousand, and professional and business services, where most jobs are held by federal contractors, went from 171.9 thousand to 166.9 thousand. Firms that depended on one kind of buyer have reason to build their own steady source of inquiries.
Destination DC organizes the city into neighborhoods such as Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, NoMa and Union Market, H Street NE, Georgetown, Southwest and The Wharf, U Street and Anacostia. Rankwyre sets up Google Maps and local listings by neighborhood and runs Google and Meta ads that send each area's searchers to a page built for them.
