LOCAL BUSINESS

Who does business in Pittsburgh

Allegheny County's business count hardly changed. It had 33,827 locations in 2022 and 33,812 in 2023, down 15, which leaves the question of what moved inside the total.

  1. Health care4,86514%
  2. Professional services4,12712%
  3. Retail stores3,97112%
  4. Repair and personal services3,75611%

Health care is the biggest sector at 4,865 locations, 14.4% against 12.9% for Pennsylvania, and it added 74. Professional services holds 12.2% against 9.9%. We build websites for law firms for exactly that.

Education grew fastest, from 516 locations to 537, up 4.1%. Finance and insurance fell by 71 to 2,108, and repair and personal services fell by 60 to 3,756.

Retail stores hold 11.7% of locations against 13.1% for the state, and construction and trades hold 8.0% against 9.4%. Half of all locations, 50%, have fewer than five employees.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Pittsburgh has 90 neighborhoods and a growing AI and robotics sector

Visit Pittsburgh lists 302,971 residents in the city, 1,250,578 in Allegheny County and 90 distinct neighborhoods. The county holds more than four times as many people as the city itself, so a business's customers may live well outside the city limits. With that many neighborhoods, a business gains by naming its own on its site and map listing instead of just saying Pittsburgh.

The technology side is changing the economy. Carnegie Mellon's April 2026 account describes its Robotics Innovation Center at Hazelwood Green, a 150,000 square foot facility on the site of a former steel plant, and the AI Science Foundry in Bakery Square. Visit Pittsburgh reports that universities have attracted more than $10 billion in research funding over the past decade. It also says more than 9,700 tech firms employ about 296,000 people, or 23.4% of the area's workforce. Firms that grow around that research need credible sites and tools to handle inquiries.

Rankwyre builds websites, web apps and CRMs and SEO for businesses near Bakery Square and Hazelwood Green, and for shops anywhere in Pittsburgh's neighborhoods.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with Pittsburgh businesses.

Our process is short, and each stage ends with something you can see.

  1. Describe the job.

A brief call is enough to cover what you do and what you need. After it you receive the scope and price in writing, and you decide from there.

  2. Review the first draft.

Pages get designed and built in drafts. A preview is yours to click through, and each round of feedback goes into the next version.

  3. Searches like "website design pittsburgh pa".

We write your Google Business Profile, local listings and service-area pages with phrases such as "website design pittsburgh pa" in view.

  4. After the launch.

We put the site live, host it and keep it updated, and none of that is billed on top. When you want something changed later, you ask.
