More than 71% of New York City businesses are very small
The New York State Comptroller reported in June 2024 that very small businesses, those with fewer than five employees, made up more than 71% of all businesses in New York City. The overall business count rose 6.5% from the first quarter of 2019 to the first quarter of 2023, against 17.4% nationally, and firms with fewer than five employees grew 10.3%. Many shops, studios and contractors share each block with a near copy of themselves. For them the first page of search results works as the storefront.
Growth was uneven. Manhattan held nearly 45% of city businesses, but very small businesses grew by at least 10% in every borough except Manhattan from 2019 to 2023. The report cited Bedford Stuyvesant with 35% more businesses and Harlem up 19.4%. Census data via Data USA gives the city 8.48 million residents in 2024. The city's Department of Small Business Services also runs free Business Solutions Centers and a MyCity Business site. A neighborhood business draws mostly from nearby blocks, so listings tied to its own neighborhood matter more than a citywide pitch.
