LOCAL INSIGHT
New York has two economies, the city and everything upstate
New York had about 2.4 million small businesses in the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 profile, and they employ 3.9 million people, or 46.6 percent of the state's workers. The largest group is professional, scientific and technical services at 347,422 firms, followed by transportation and warehousing at 315,172. Most of these are owner operators with no staff, which means the website is often the only sales tool they have.
The State Comptroller's 2026 report counts almost 9.7 million jobs in 2024, with New York City holding nearly half of them. Outside the city, health care, retail trade and educational services rank among the five largest sectors in all nine regions, and manufacturing remains one of the largest sectors in five of them, including Western New York, the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier. Pay is higher on Long Island and in the Mid-Hudson and Capital District. The state Department of Labor reported private sector jobs up 1.4 percent over the year in August 2025. A contractor in Buffalo and a consultant in Manhattan compete for different searches, so each needs its own local pages and listings.
Rankwyre builds websites and online stores for New York owners, and runs SEO that targets the right region, whether that is Long Island, the Hudson Valley or the Finger Lakes. A manufacturer in the Southern Tier needs buyer facing pages, and a retailer downstate needs a store that handles heavy mobile traffic.
