LOCAL INSIGHT

Rochester, NY leans on a university health system and an optics cluster

The New York Fed's October 2026 profile puts the Rochester metro at 1,057,218 people in 2024, the third largest in New York State, with a 10 year population change of negative 0.7%. Metro GDP was $77 billion in 2023, median household income was $71,200 and job growth over five years was negative 2.0%. The profile says manufacturing once centered on Kodak, Bausch & Lomb and Xerox has shrunk since the 1980s. In a market that is not growing, new customers mostly come from a competitor.

The University of Rochester is now the region's largest employer. Its December 2025 report, using fiscal 2024 data, counts more than 39,000 employees across the university, UR Medicine and affiliates, and says it directly supports 32,200 jobs in the city, 1 in every 14. In July 2026 the National Science Foundation announced $15 million for a laser technology hub led by the university, noting the Rochester and Finger Lakes region already has more than 150 optics, photonics, imaging and laser supply chain companies.

We build SEO and websites for Rochester businesses that sell to hospitals and optics firms, with pages written for the buyer's actual search.
