LOCAL BUSINESS

Who does business in Juneau

Juneau City and Borough lost ground in the count. There were 1,100 business locations in 2023, down 28 from 1,128 the year before, and 56% of them have fewer than 5 employees.

  1. Retail stores12611%
  2. Construction and trades12511%
  3. Health care12511%
  4. Restaurants and hospitality10910%

Retail stores lead at 126 locations, 11.5% of the total against 10.9% for Alaska. They are also where the drop shows, down 6 from 132. A shop can take orders online with our online stores, ready in about 10 days.

Transportation and warehousing grew from 69 locations to 72, up 4.3%, and its share is 6.5% against 5.6% for Alaska. Professional services moved the other way, from 97 to 92, and business support and cleaning services went from 68 to 62.

Health care and construction and trades both have 125 locations. Health care was 128 a year earlier, and its 11.4% share sits under the Alaska figure of 13.0%. Clinics get websites for dental practices from us, with services and booking laid out plainly.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Juneau runs on government paychecks, a mine and a tourism season

Juneau is Alaska's capital, and the Juneau Economic Development Council's 2025 report shows what that means. Government jobs fell 1.6% in 2025, with federal down 7%, local and tribal down 2.4% and state up 0.1%. Private employment rose 1.2% to an all time high, and mining was about 6% of jobs but 11% of earnings. Residents are fewer than before, 31,182 in 2025 against a peak of 33,445 in 2015, so a local business is selling to a small, stable group.

Tourism is the other pull. Tourism related employment reached 99.9% of its 2019 level in 2025, with leisure, hospitality and transportation averaging 3,157 workers. Mendenhall Glacier is 13 miles from downtown, and visitors in the Tongass National Forest plan stops before they arrive. Gross business sales rose 11.2% to about $3.82 billion in 2025, and new business applications rose 21.6%, a 20 year high. More new businesses means more competition for the same searches.

Rankwyre builds websites that can carry a visitor offer alongside a plain local one, and keeps Google Maps and local listings current for tour operators, restaurants and trades near downtown and the Mendenhall Valley.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with Juneau businesses.

Working with a Juneau business goes in four stages, and none of them needs you to know web jargon.

  1. Plain talk and a price.

One short call to learn what you do and what you need. The price goes in writing before anything gets built.

  2. Pages appear in stages.

You see a preview early and again as pages fill in, and your feedback steers each round of changes.

  3. Found by Juneau searchers.

We build out your Google Business Profile, local listings and service-area pages so the site works for people searching close by.

  4. Launch, then lean on us.

Launch takes about 7 days for a website. Hosting and updates are included, and we answer questions after launch too.

BEFORE YOU ASK

Questions from Juneau businesses

Is the Juneau business base growing or shrinking?

Slightly smaller. The borough counted 1,100 business locations in 2023 against 1,128 in 2022, a loss of 28, or 2.5%. Transportation and warehousing grew, but retail stores, health care, professional services and business support and cleaning services all lost locations.

Which other Alaska areas do you have pages for?

Anchorage and Fairbanks. Each page uses that area's own Census counts. A Juneau business doesn't have to be near either to work with us, since projects run remotely: a call, drafts you review online, then a launch.

Can a Juneau business change its website for the cruise season?

Yes. A standard website launches in about 7 days, from $399 a month plus a $299 one-time setup, with hosting, SSL and maintenance included. There is no contract. Prices are the same everywhere.
