LOCAL INSIGHT
Alaska's economy swings with the summer visitor season
Small businesses employed 54.2 percent of Alaska's workers in 2022, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, across 77,814 small businesses. Professional services is the largest group by count at 8,911 firms, and agriculture, forestry and fishing is second at 8,048. Of the businesses classifiable by location, 11,538 were rural and 42,380 were urban. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows government as the largest job sector, 77,900 of 341,800 jobs in August 2026 (preliminary), and lists only Anchorage and Fairbanks as metro areas.
Visitors add a strong seasonal swing. The Alaska Travel Industry Association reported more than 3 million visitors from May 2024 through April 2025, up 1.1 percent. About 88 percent came in summer, over half arrived by cruise ship, and fewer than 400,000 came in winter. Tourism supported 48,000 jobs, and Juneau's port alone handled 1.7 million cruise passengers. A business selling to visitors has a few months to be found, so its site and listings must be ready before the season opens.
