LOCAL INSIGHT
Georgia growth is shifting to the edges of metro Atlanta
The Atlanta Regional Commission found metro Atlanta added just under 62,000 people between July 2024 and June 2025, making it the sixth most populous metro in the country. The core counties of Fulton, Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb added the most people but grew under 1 percent, while counties on the edge such as Dawson and Jackson grew faster, with Jackson at 5.3 percent. A band of counties from southwest Georgia toward the northeast lost population.
The U.S. Small Business Administration counts 1.4 million small businesses in Georgia, with 253,654 rural and 995,144 urban among those classifiable by location. Other services lead by count at 182,664 firms. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists 15 metro areas, including Savannah, Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Warner Robins. Trade, transportation and utilities is the largest job sector at 1.03 million of 4.99 million in August 2026 (preliminary), and unemployment was 3.2 percent. Those are separate search markets, so a Macon or Savannah business should not rely on Atlanta traffic.
Rankwyre builds websites and runs Google Maps and local listings for Georgia businesses in the Atlanta suburbs, Savannah and beyond, at the same price as every other state.
