LOCAL INSIGHT
Oregon's growth is concentrated in Portland while rural counties shrink
Oregon's population grew by 14,021 people, or 0.3 percent, in the year to July 1, 2025, according to Portland State University estimates reported by the state Employment Department. Since 2020 the state has grown 1.4 percent, but Jackson County is still 1,881 residents below its 2020 level at 221,471, while neighboring Josephine County grew 1.4 percent to 89,686. The SBA counted 417,747 small businesses in 2025, and 53.4 percent of the state's workers are employed by one. A business in Medford and one in Portland rarely compete for the same customers, and the growth they see differs.
Manufacturing is unusual here. The state had 178,900 manufacturing jobs in 2025, and semiconductors and electronic components make up 19 percent of the sector against about 8 percent nationally. Those jobs average $173,000 in pay, but employment has fallen since 2023. Tourism helps rural areas: Travel Oregon reported $14.3 billion in direct visitor spending in 2024, a record, supporting 121,000 jobs. Professional services lead the small business count at 65,344 firms, and real estate follows at 42,626.
Rankwyre builds websites and Google Maps and local listings for Oregon owners, from Rogue Valley and coast businesses that live on visitor searches to Portland suburbs where competition is heavy.
