LOCAL INSIGHT

Hilo draws far fewer visitors than Kona and leans on science

Hilo has 50,404 residents, a median age of 42.7 and a median household income of $81,779 (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024, Hilo census designated place). Monthly figures from the Hawaii Tourism Authority add up to about 566,000 visitors to Hilo in 2025, against about 1.52 million to Kona. Residents are the steadier customer base for most Hilo businesses, so listings and hours have to be right for locals first.

A 2019 study from the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization found that astronomy related spending in Hawaii County came to $57.18 million and generated 611 jobs in the county. The report names Mauna Kea Infrared, an instrumentation maker based in Hilo. UH Hilo, founded in 1947, runs a Science and Technology Park of 487 acres and has appeared on U.S. News's list of most diverse national universities every year from 2020 through 2025. Technical employers and a university recruit from far away, so their sites and job pages need to make sense to people off the island.

Rankwyre builds websites, online stores and web apps and runs SEO. A Hilo shop, farm or instrument maker near UH Hilo can use an online store to sell beyond the island, and Google Maps and local listings to be found by residents first.
