Who does business in Honolulu

Honolulu County is nearly an even split at the top: retail stores have 2,635 business locations and restaurants and hospitality 2,626, each 12.6% of the total. The county dipped by 74 in 2023, to 20,890.

  1. Retail stores2,63513%
  2. Restaurants and hospitality2,62613%
  3. Health care2,57012%
  4. Professional services2,37911%

Retail stores fell by 43 from 2,678, and their share is under the Hawaii figure of 13.3%. Restaurants and hospitality is a touch above the state's 12.3%. Restaurant owners can start from websites for restaurants.

The fastest growth was outside the top eight: arts, fitness and recreation rose from 275 locations to 287, up 4.4%. Professional services added 46 to reach 2,379, a 11.4% share against 10.5% for the state.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Honolulu businesses sell to visitors on a short stay and residents on a tight budget

Tourism sets the pace on Oahu. The state's January 2025 figures show 456,607 visitors to the island, who spent $775.8 million and stayed an average of 7.6 days. Statewide, the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism expects visitor spending to reach $22.4 billion in 2026. A visitor deciding where to eat near Waikiki or what to buy at Ala Moana often searches on a phone from the sidewalk, so a business that does not show up on the map and in search misses them.

The resident side is steadier but squeezed. The same department projects flat population in 2026, puts unemployment at 2.9% in July 2026, and reports Honolulu consumer prices up 5.6% over the year to July 2026, against 3.4% for the nation. With few new customers arriving and prices rising, a local business gains most by keeping the customers it has, through easy booking, reorders and clear pricing on its own website.

Honolulu's tourist and local trade run through different places. Waikiki, Ala Moana with its 290 shops and 80 places to eat, Downtown, Chinatown and Kapiolani Park each pull a different crowd. Rankwyre builds websites that speak to both groups and sets up Google Maps and local listings so a Chinatown cafe or a Downtown studio shows up where its own neighbors and passing visitors are searching.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with Honolulu businesses.

A project for a Honolulu business has four parts. They run in this order.

  1. Describe it, get a number.

One call, then the price in writing. Building starts only after you've seen it.

  2. Try the draft.

We share a preview partway through. You tell us what to adjust, and the next version reflects it.

  3. Showing up in the right searches.

Your Google Business Profile, local listings and area pages get set up, and we can build toward a phrase you want to appear for.

  4. Launch and keep it current.

Websites go live in about 7 days. Hosting and updates are included, and support continues afterward.

BEFORE YOU ASK

Questions from Honolulu businesses

Is retail or restaurants bigger in Honolulu?

They're almost tied. Retail stores have 2,635 locations and restaurants and hospitality 2,626, each 12.6% of the total. Retail slipped by 43 from 2022, while restaurants and hospitality added 9. Health care sits just behind with 2,570.

Which other Hawaii places have pages?

Hilo and Kailua. Both draw on Hawaii County's numbers rather than Honolulu County's. The service doesn't change by page: a website is $399 a month with a $299 setup, quoted in writing first. Search work on top of that is $599 a month, with no setup. A web app is quoted at $1,000 one time.

How fast can a business in Honolulu get a new website?

A standard website launches in about 7 days and an online store in about 10. Websites start at $399 a month plus a $299 one-time setup, hosting, SSL and maintenance are included, and there is no contract. Prices are the same everywhere.
