LOCAL INSIGHT

Hawaii's small businesses sell to visitors and locals, island by island

The SBA Office of Advocacy counted 144,375 small businesses in Hawaii in its 2025 profile, which is 99.3 percent of the state's businesses. Of those, 119,647 have no employees, so most are owner operators. Professional, scientific and technical services is the largest group at 19,640, followed by real estate and rental at 16,729. Census estimates summarized by Maine's state economist show Hawaii among five states that lost population between 2024 and 2025, so a local business can't count on new neighbors to find it. One person running a shop needs a site that sells without being tended all day.

Tourism shapes search on every island. The state's business development department (DBEDT) reported 6,597,312 visitors in the first eight months of 2025, up 0.7 percent from a year earlier, spending $14.62 billion. The islands recover at different speeds. Maui had 1,709,089 visitors in that stretch, still 18.8 percent below the same months of 2019, while Kauai, at 976,995, ran 3.3 percent above 2019 and Oahu had 3,895,292. A business on Maui and one on Oahu face different demand, and each needs its own accurate listing and pages, because a visitor can skip any business that is hard to find on a map.

Rankwyre builds websites from $399 a month plus a $299 setup, with hosting, SSL and maintenance included, so an owner with no staff is not left running the technical side. We also set up Google Maps and local listings so a business on Oahu, Maui or Kauai shows the right location, hours and services to people planning a trip.
