LOCAL INSIGHT

Austin's growth has slowed, but tech and the university still lead

The Dallas Fed puts the Austin metro at about 2.5 million people in 2023, up 20.3 percent from 2016 against 9.5 percent for Texas. Median household income was $97,638 versus $76,292 statewide, and average annual earnings were about $81,635. Customers with those incomes compare businesses closely, and a slow or dated site loses them. Payrolls grew 11.6 percent from December 2021 to December 2024, and unemployment was 3.5 percent that month, so competition for customers and workers is steady.

Its most concentrated clusters are IT manufacturing and services, business services, and aerospace and defense, and state government and UT Austin are major employers. IT workers averaged about $163,163 a year. UT Austin reports about 55,000 students, 4,600 faculty and 15,000 staff. The Austin Technology Council notes that Tesla, Oracle and Meta have opened major local sites, and venture funding rose more than 400 percent between 2015 and 2023. Startups and campus businesses here are judged first on how they look online.

Rankwyre builds web apps and CRMs for Austin startups and service firms, and redesigns dated sites near the UT campus and downtown so they match the quality buyers expect.
