LOCAL INSIGHT

Texas has 3.5 million small businesses and most have no employees

Texas had 3.5 million small businesses in 2025, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy, and they employed 5.1 million people. About 3.02 million of them have no employees. The largest groups are professional, scientific and technical services (429,794), construction (428,901) and transportation and warehousing (415,445). Small firms also account for most exporters: 37,283 of the 40,415 identified Texas exporters in 2023 were small. With that many competitors in every trade, ranking for a specific service in a specific area is the practical way to be found.

The state keeps adding customers. The Texas Demographic Center puts the 2025 population at 31.7 million, up 1.2 percent from 2024, and the Census Bureau says that growth came from births and net international migration, where Texas ranked second to Florida at 167,475 people. The Texas Workforce Commission counted 14,469,600 nonfarm jobs in June 2026, up 177,900 over the year, with professional and business services adding the most at 68,900. New residents arrive every year, and so do new competitors. A business that was easy to find three years ago may not be today.

Rankwyre builds web apps and CRMs for Texas companies that have outgrown spreadsheets, starting at $1,000 one time and quoted in writing. For companies that need leads, Google and Meta ads can run alongside the site so a growing metro's new residents find the business first.
