LOCAL INSIGHT

West Virginia is losing residents while billions in projects are announced

West Virginia had 118,045 small businesses in 2025, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy, with 256,281 small business employees. About 79 percent have no employees. The biggest groups by count are other services (15,971), professional, scientific and technical services (12,469), construction (12,454) and retail (12,282). Between March 2023 and March 2024, 6,745 establishments opened and 4,802 closed, a net gain of 1,943. Many of these are one person operations whose customers find them by searching a town name and a trade.

The Census Bureau lists West Virginia among five states whose population fell between July 2024 and July 2025. At the same time, the state's economic development division says about $96 billion in private investment has been announced since October 2025, supporting more than 19,000 projected jobs. That includes a $69.2 billion data center project and a $12 billion project in Mason County, plus $453 million from Toyota at its Buffalo plant. Construction, supply and service firms near these sites will see new demand, and new buyers search before they call anyone.

Rankwyre helps local contractors and suppliers get a clear websites site and a profile that shows up in Google Maps and local listings. Websites start at $399 a month plus a $299 one time setup and launch in about 7 days.
