LOCAL INSIGHT
Virginia added 248,000 residents since 2020, nearly all in metro areas
The Weldon Cooper Center puts Virginia's population at 8.88 million on July 1, 2025, up more than 248,000 since the 2020 Census. About 88 percent of Virginians live in metropolitan areas, and those areas accounted for 97.6 percent of the growth. Micropolitan areas lost 6,541 residents, a 2.6 percent decline, while rural localities gained 12,458, or 1.6 percent. Of the state's 133 localities, 93 grew. The market is split between fast changing metros and slower towns with long standing customers, and the two search differently.
Virginia had 880,366 small businesses in 2025, per the SBA Office of Advocacy, employing 1.6 million people. Professional, scientific and technical services is the largest group at 136,539, ahead of transportation and warehousing (104,230) and other services (93,918). Veterans made up 8.1 percent of business ownership. Visitors add demand: the Virginia Tourism Corporation reports 117.1 million visitors spent $36.2 billion in 2025, and that spending supports 8.0 percent of the state's jobs.
Rankwyre serves both kinds of Virginia market. A metro firm facing many rivals benefits from SEO at $599 a month, with no setup fee. A rural business may just need a clear website with hosting, SSL and maintenance included, live in about 7 days. See the pricing page for the full list.
