LOCAL INSIGHT

South Dakota is a state of one person businesses and 15 million visitors

South Dakota had 96,770 small businesses in 2025, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy, and they make up 98.9 percent of the state's businesses. They employ 216,705 people, which is 58.0 percent of all employees. Most are very small: 74,028 of them have no employees, so the owner is the whole staff. When a customer looks for a contractor or an accountant, the choice is usually between solo operators, and the one with a clear website that names the service and the town gets the job.

By count, the biggest groups are real estate and rental (11,752 businesses), construction (11,564) and retail (10,060). The state's economic development agency names agriculture, national security, manufacturing, cybersecurity and bioscience as its key industries. Turnover is steady: between March 2023 and March 2024, 3,840 establishments opened and 3,196 closed. Tourism adds a second audience. Travel South Dakota reports that 14.97 million visitors spent $5.16 billion in 2025, which was 4.7 percent of the state economy and supported 59,145 jobs. Visitors search on their phones for places to eat, stay and shop, so an accurate listing and a fast mobile page matter as much as the storefront.

Rankwyre builds for both sides of that market. A trade or service business can get a standard website live in about 7 days, with hosting, SSL and maintenance included. A shop that sells to visitors can add one of our online stores in about 10 days. Prices are the same in South Dakota as everywhere else, and there is no contract.
