LOCAL INSIGHT

Rapid City runs on visitors, an Air Force base and a big health system

Visit Rapid City reports that 3.93 million visitors spent $527.3 million in the city in 2025, supporting 7,704 jobs, about 1 in 10 in Rapid City. Overnight guests were 46.9% of visitors but 76.4% of visitor spending. The Minneapolis Fed, citing the state tourism agency, puts visitor spending across the metro at $1.2 billion in 2023, or 12% of local GDP. Visitors headed for Mount Rushmore or the Badlands choose where to eat and sleep from map results, so a restaurant near Main Street Square or a Black Hills outfitter lives on its listing.

Ellsworth Air Force Base has about 4,100 personnel, roughly 5% of the area's civilian labor force, and the Fed calls it the area's largest employer. Personnel are set to peak at 6,300 during the B-21 transition before settling at 5,900. Monument Health serves a region of about 450,000 people, and health care is 14% of local GDP. Elevate Rapid City counts the metro at 154,841. Families arriving with the base and retirees moving in do not yet know local names, so they search first.

We set up Google Maps and local listings for Rapid City businesses and run Google and Meta ads aimed at the weeks when visitors and new arrivals are deciding.
