LOCAL INSIGHT

Rutland sells to a county of small towns, not one city

The Rutland Regional Planning Commission lists Rutland City at 15,807 residents, inside a county of 28 towns in southwestern Vermont. Castleton has 4,458, Poultney 3,020 and Killington 1,407, so a customer base here is spread across many small places. A 2024 county economic report says the population has been flat for 10 to 13 years, that the top eight employers hold about a quarter of the workforce, and that nearly 2,000 small businesses employ the rest, 1,500 of them with fewer than five workers. A shop or contractor in Rutland therefore needs a site that names every town it actually serves.

The same 2024 report puts the county labor force at 20,312 with 2.1 percent unemployment, and median household income at $62,641 against $73,991 for Vermont. Citing a 2020 housing assessment, it also says about 20 percent of the county's housing is seasonal or occasional use, compared with 17 percent statewide, and that tradespeople average nearly 60 years old. Real Rutland, the regional recruiting effort, lists hiring employers such as Green Mountain Power, Casella, Rutland Regional Medical Center, GE Aviation and Killington, and describes a 24,000 square foot coworking space downtown. Owners who sell to second home owners and visitors need pages that rank for people searching from outside Vermont.

Rankwyre builds websites for Rutland shops, contractors and service firms, with a page for each town they cover, from Rutland and Proctor to Castleton and Killington. We also set up Google Maps and local listings so a customer in Poultney or Brandon finds the right business first.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with Rutland businesses.

Here's what working with us looks like for a Rutland County business, one stage at a time.

  1. Talk, then price.

Our first step is a short scoping call. The price arrives in writing and work starts only once you agree to it.

  2. Watch the site appear.

Drafts land in your inbox as we build. Your feedback guides each revision until the design is right.

  3. Be found across the county.

We set up your Google Business Profile, local listings and service-area pages, so searchers in nearby towns can reach you.

  4. Open for business online.

The site launches, with hosting and updates included in the plan. Support continues after the launch date.
