LOCAL INSIGHT
Vermont has 81,949 small businesses in a state that lost residents
Vermont had 81,949 small businesses in 2025, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy, employing 157,959 people. Roughly 79 percent of them have no employees. Professional, scientific and technical services (11,897) and construction (11,642) lead the count, followed by real estate and rental (7,337). SBA reports that women made up 49.0 percent of business ownership, and 1,008 Vermont firms exported $1.9 billion in goods in 2023. Between March 2023 and March 2024, 3,552 establishments opened and 3,020 closed.
The customer base is not growing. The Census Bureau lists Vermont among the five states whose population fell between July 2024 and July 2025. The Vermont Department of Labor reports that nonfarm employment ended 2025 at 311,500, down 700 jobs from December 2024. Trade, transportation and utilities lost 1,300 jobs while leisure and hospitality gained 700. In a market where the number of local customers is flat, each one counts, and a business competes on how easily it is found and how clearly its site explains what it does.
Rankwyre builds websites for small Vermont firms with hosting, SSL and maintenance included, and handles redesigns for owners whose current site no longer reflects the business. Google Maps and local listings keeps listings accurate in small towns, where a single listing may be the first thing a visitor sees.
