LOCAL INSIGHT
Portland, Maine sells to cruise passengers, hospital staff and locals
Visit Portland told Mainebiz that 110 ships brought 157,775 passengers to the city in 2023, worth at least $13 million to the Greater Portland area, and that 153 vessels with more than 204,000 passengers were expected in 2024. In November 2022 voters rejected a cap of 1,000 disembarking passengers a day by 23,547 votes to 8,875, so the traffic is staying. A restaurant or shop near the waterfront needs a site and a map listing that work on busy ship days and show menus and hours clearly on a small screen.
Portland had 69,568 residents in July 2024, according to Maine's State Economist, nearly twice the size of Lewiston. It added 201 people that year while Westbrook added 693, Windham 264 and Scarborough 220, so many customers live in the surrounding towns and search from there. Maine Department of Labor data for early 2026 lists Unum at 2,001 to 2,500 employees in Portland, and MaineHealth Maine Medical Center reports more than 9,000 care team members across Portland, Biddeford and Sanford. Workers at employers like these are customers for nearby lunch spots and services.
We build websites for Old Port, Bayside and Arts District businesses, which Visit Portland describes as close neighbors, and tie them to Google Maps and local listings so a search from Westbrook or Scarborough lands on the right door.
