LOCAL BUSINESS

Who does business in Maine

Fully 58% of Maine's business locations have fewer than 5 employees. The state counted 43,345 locations in 2023, 160 more than the 43,185 it had in 2022.

  1. Retail stores6,03914%
  2. Construction and trades5,82613%
  3. Health care5,06212%
  4. Restaurants and hospitality4,36210%

Construction and trades is 13.4% of Maine, while the United States share is 9.7%. It also grew, up 169 locations to 5,826, a rise of 3.0%. We build websites for roofers with that kind of work in mind.

Real estate is the fastest growing sector, 2,089 locations in 2022 and 2,162 in 2023, up 3.5%. Retail went the other direction, down 57 to 6,039, though it's still the largest group at 13.9%.

Professional services is 8.4% of the state against 11.8% across the United States, and its count of 3,662 didn't change from 2022. Health care grew by 83, up 1.7%.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Maine has more rural than urban small businesses, plus a seasonal visitor economy

Maine's population hit a record 1,414,874 in 2025, according to the state economist's summary of Census figures. It grew 0.5 percent, and since April 2020 it is up 3.8 percent. Deaths outnumber births (a natural decline of 5,019), so the growth comes from people moving in, at 8.1 per thousand residents, the highest net migration rate in New England. Newcomers choose plumbers, builders and accountants by searching, since they have no local referrals yet.

The SBA Office of Advocacy counted 160,215 small businesses in Maine in 2025, 99.2 percent of the total and 54.5 percent of employees. Rural areas hold 81,531 and urban areas 55,959. Construction leads at 24,122, ahead of professional, scientific and technical services at 19,350 and real estate at 15,908. Tourism matters too. The governor said in April 2025 that nearly 15 million people visited Maine the year before, spent over $9 billion and supported about 116,000 jobs, and that the state could lose 225,000 Canadian visitors that year. A seasonal business has a short window to be found.

Rankwyre builds websites for Maine inns, shops, builders and farms, then keeps Google Maps and local listings accurate so hours and seasonal changes show up when visitors search.
