LOCAL INSIGHT
Oklahoma's growth is in aerospace, defense and small towns
Oklahoma had 395,520 small businesses in the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 profile, and they employ 50.8 percent of the state's workers. Construction leads at 49,414 firms, ahead of other services at 46,695 and professional services at 44,310. There are also 12,352 small firms in mining, quarrying and oil and gas, a bigger group than manufacturing at 7,492. Most of these firms work alone, so customers mainly find them through search.
The Oklahoma Department of Commerce calls aerospace and defense the state's second largest and fastest growing industry. It reported $450 million in new capital investment and 1,325 new jobs from 37 projects in 2025, with 60 percent of the wins in metro areas and 40 percent in rural ones. The state also logged a record $14.7 billion in capital investment that year. Announcements landed in Lawton, Bristow and the MidAmerica Industrial Park, which are not big city addresses. Suppliers and contractors in smaller communities need to be found by the prime contractors and workers moving in.
Rankwyre builds websites and web apps and CRMs for Oklahoma firms that track bids, jobs and customers, and adds Google Maps and local listings for shops in Lawton and other towns that rarely show up in a generic search.
