LOCAL INSIGHT

North Carolina is growing fast, but mostly around its biggest metros

North Carolina's population reached about 11.2 million on July 1, 2025, according to the state demographer, after adding 146,000 people in a year. That was slower than the 180,000 added the year before. The state demographer expects another 534,000 residents between 2025 and 2030. New neighbors search for plumbers, dentists and restaurants before they know a single name, so a business that shows up early gets the first call.

The growth is uneven. Urban and suburban counties hold about two thirds of residents and have taken 77 percent of the growth since 2020, while rural counties, home to roughly 3.8 million people, are expected to get about 20 percent of the growth through 2030. Seventy-six of the 100 counties are gaining people, and the fastest towns sit near Raleigh and Charlotte or along the coast. In western North Carolina, Hurricane Helene cut the growth rate to 0.5 percent in the year to July 2025. The SBA counted 1.1 million small businesses in 2025, led by professional services at 139,289 and other services at 133,012. A rural shop and a Triangle suburb need very different local search plans.

Rankwyre sets up Google Maps and local listings for the towns around Wake Forest, Apex and Cary where new customers keep arriving, and builds websites for businesses in the coastal, mountain and lake counties where rural growth is strongest.
