LOCAL INSIGHT

Mississippi's growth is on the coast and in the metro counties

Mississippi's population fell by 15,491 people, or 0.5 percent, between 2020 and 2024, according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, but the loss was not even. The Delta workforce area lost 18,277 residents, a 7.2 percent drop, while Gulfport-Biloxi grew by 10,121 and DeSoto County by 9,742. The Jackson metro area was the only metro region to shrink, losing 12,705 residents. A business owner in the Delta and one on the coast face very different pools of local customers.

The state has 283,383 small businesses, 99.3 percent of firms, employing 46.2 percent of workers, per the SBA Office of Advocacy. Other services leads at 42,398, with construction at 35,323. The BLS counts about 1,162,900 covered jobs in March 2026, and Hinds and Harrison counties together hold 17.0 percent. State employment grew by more than 77,800 jobs from 2020 to 2024, with gains in metro areas and declines in several rural counties. The Hispanic share of the population rose from 3.6 to 4.1 percent over the same years.

Rankwyre builds websites for Mississippi owners in the Jackson area, the Gulf Coast and smaller towns, and sets up Google Maps and local listings so a business in Gulfport or DeSoto County appears when nearby people search. Where customers are thin on the ground, being findable beyond one town helps.
