LOCAL INSIGHT

Gulfport's port and its storm history shape local business

Gulfport has 73,003 residents and a median household income of $49,919, and 23.6 percent of adults hold a bachelor's degree (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024). The Mississippi State Port Authority says the Port of Gulfport was established in 1902 and covers 300 acres of deep water berths plus 116 acres inland. Its tenants include Dole, Chiquita and Crowley, and bananas, pineapples and frozen poultry move through it. Businesses that serve the port need to show up when a shipper searches for storage, trucking or repair, and the website has to list those services by name.

The port's history page says Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005 each leveled its facilities and that it rebuilt both times. It now calls itself the third largest container port on the Gulf of Mexico, and says trucks can reach 75 percent of the U.S. market within 24 hours. The City of Gulfport's homepage carries boil water and road closure notices next to its business links. When a storm closes a street or a shop, customers check listings first, so hours and status need updating quickly.

Rankwyre builds websites, online stores and web apps and sets up Google Maps and local listings, which matters when hours change after a storm. A trucking firm, marine supplier or restaurant near the Port of Gulfport can pair that with SEO for the services shippers and residents search for.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with Gulfport businesses.

A Gulfport project follows four steps. They run in order, and you'll know what's coming next at each stage.

  1. Plan it on a call.

The opening call covers your goals and what you sell. We then write up the price and wait for your yes before starting.

  2. Design, build, review.

Drafts reach you early on. You check the previews and tell us what to change as the pages come together.

  3. Found by Gulfport searchers.

We set up your Google Business Profile and local listings, and write service-area pages for the places you work.

  4. Go live and stay covered.

Your site launches on our hosting. Updates come with the plan, and we're around for support after the launch.

BEFORE YOU ASK

Questions from Gulfport businesses

Is Gulfport's retail share higher than the rest of Mississippi?

Slightly. Retail stores are 19.0% of Harrison County and 18.7% of the state. The count is 832 locations, up 17 from 815. It's the biggest sector, with restaurants and hospitality second at 572.

Do you build for Jackson or Southaven businesses too?

Yes. We work with businesses anywhere in the US. Jackson and Southaven owners follow the same process, and a web app is $1,000 one time, quoted in writing, for anything that needs more than a website.

Can my Gulfport business keep its hours correct when a storm closes us?

Yes. Maintenance and support are part of the plan, and prices are the same everywhere. Websites start at $399 a month plus a $299 one-time setup, with hosting, SSL and maintenance included. There is no contract.
