LOCAL INSIGHT

Iowa's economy runs on insurance and factories as much as farms

Many people picture Iowa as farmland, but the state's economic development authority lists advanced manufacturing as its largest industry, at 17 percent of GDP. It also names bioscience, finance and insurance, and information technology as key industries. Iowa has 7,000 finance and insurance companies employing nearly 95,000 people, and 180 insurance companies headquartered there as of 2021. Companies that sell to those employers and their staff compete online with firms from much larger states.

The SBA Office of Advocacy counted 289,962 small businesses in Iowa in 2025, 99.3 percent of the total and 46.0 percent of employees. Construction is the largest group at 36,151, with professional, scientific and technical services at 28,756 and retail at 27,204. Rural matters here. The SBA lists 105,701 small businesses in rural areas and 157,423 in urban ones, so rural firms are a large share. Agriculture, forestry and fishing alone accounts for 6,346 small businesses.

Rankwyre builds websites that explain a service plainly and load quickly on a phone, plus Google Maps and local listings so a farm supplier, contractor or accountant can be found from a county road, not only from a metro address.
