World Business Chicago ranks the region as the third-largest metro economy in the country, at about $929 billion in gross regional product, with no single sector above 13% of regional GDP. In August 2026 the Chicago area had 4,785,000 nonfarm jobs, led by trade, transportation and utilities (931,700), professional and business services (820,200), and education and health services (802,300), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Neighborhood business districts here are organized. The city has 58 active Special Service Areas, commercial districts where a local chamber or business association funds extra services, from State Street in the Loop to Wicker Park and Bucktown and the Clark Street and Lincoln Avenue corridors in Lincoln Park. Competition inside each district is close, so a strong Google Business Profile and fast mobile pages often decide which shop gets the visit.
Chicago is also home to one of the country's largest Polish-speaking communities. WBEZ reports that more than 7% of all U.S. Polish speakers live in Chicago, mostly on the Northwest Side around neighborhoods like Jefferson Park, and many of the searches that reach this page are in Polish.
