LOCAL INSIGHT

Illinois has 1.35 million small businesses, and most sit outside any one city

The SBA Office of Advocacy counted 1,353,957 small businesses in Illinois in 2025, which is 99.6 percent of all businesses and 43.7 percent of employees. The largest group is transportation and warehousing at 210,396, and 191,944 of those have no employees, so most are one person operations. Professional, scientific and technical services follows at 172,405, then construction at 122,672. A solo operator in this field usually wins work through a Google search, not through a sales team.

The state's economic development agency (DCEO) calls Illinois the most diverse economy in America, with the fifth highest GDP and nearly 30 Fortune 500 companies. Its Northeast Region page lists ten counties, from Cook and DuPage to Kankakee, with hubs in Chicago, Aurora, Joliet, Naperville, Elgin, Waukegan and Cicero. Downstate is different. The SBA counts 124,356 small businesses in rural areas against 1,163,622 in urban ones, and 152,867 are Hispanic owned. A business in Joliet and one downstate compete for different searches, and some businesses may want Spanish language pages.

Rankwyre builds websites and online stores for Illinois owners, then runs SEO that targets the suburbs and towns a business really serves, such as Naperville, Aurora or Elgin, instead of one broad Chicago term.
