LOCAL INSIGHT
North Dakota businesses serve a small, spread out and oil driven market
North Dakota reached a record 799,358 residents on July 1, 2025, according to the governor's office, which cited Census estimates. The state grew about 50 percent faster than the national average that year and has added roughly 19 percent since 2010. Small businesses employ 57.6 percent of the state's workers in the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 profile, across 78,219 firms. With fewer than 800,000 residents spread across a large state, a customer who plans to drive to a business wants to confirm hours and services online first.
Energy shapes the economy. The Department of Mineral Resources reported 1,152,796 barrels of oil a day in June 2026, and the department's county breakdown puts roughly a third of production in McKenzie County alone. The state commerce department lists coal, oil, wind and solar as parts of its energy base. The SBA data show real estate is the largest small business group at 9,554 firms, ahead of construction at 8,383, and mining firms number 1,305. Contractors, truckers and service companies that follow the oil activity need to be easy to find in the towns where the work happens.
Rankwyre builds websites and web apps and CRMs for contractors and service firms working the Williston Basin and McKenzie County, tied to Google Maps and local listings so crews and customers find the right address and hours first.
