LOCAL INSIGHT

Three counties hold 59 percent of Nebraska's jobs

The BLS reports 1,008,200 covered jobs in Nebraska in March 2026 across about 78,900 establishments. Douglas County has 337,700, Lancaster 173,800 and Sarpy 83,000, and together they hold 59.0 percent. The remaining 41 percent are spread across the rest of the state, so a business in a small town draws from a different customer base than one in Omaha or Lincoln. A site and listing for a small town firm has to say plainly which town it serves.

The SBA Office of Advocacy counts 188,716 small businesses, 99.1 percent of firms, employing 48.6 percent of workers. Construction leads at 22,869, with other services at 20,770 and real estate at 20,443. The Nebraska Department of Labor reports that finance and insurance was the largest sector by GDP in the second quarter of 2024 at $24.3 billion, with manufacturing second at $21.6 billion. Food manufacturing alone employed 41,254 people, 39.5 percent of the state's manufacturing jobs.

Rankwyre builds websites and web apps and CRMs for Nebraska owners, including suppliers and service firms that sell to the food and manufacturing sector and need to quote and track jobs online. For local trades, local listings in Papillion, Lincoln or Grand Island put them in front of nearby searchers.
