LOCAL INSIGHT

Montana depends on small firms and travelers from other states

Small businesses employ 65.9 percent of Montana's workers, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy. The state has 136,968 small businesses, 99.3 percent of all firms. Construction leads at 20,538, followed by real estate at 17,601 and professional, scientific and technical services at 17,123. Most of these owners run a small crew, so one missed inquiry matters.

Employment is spread thin. Yellowstone County is the only Montana county with 75,000 or more annual average jobs, and its roughly 86,100 workers are 17.0 percent of the state's 506,600 in March 2026, per the BLS. The rest sit in smaller counties and towns. The University of Montana's Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research estimated 13.8 million nonresident visitors in 2024, a record, spending about $5.0 billion and supporting an estimated 38,240 jobs. Guides, lodges and shops need to be found by people planning a trip from another state.

Rankwyre builds websites for Montana owners and sets up Google Maps and local listings for each town they serve, so a visitor searching near Billings or the parks sees accurate hours. Because everything is remote, distance from a city makes no difference to price.
