LOCAL INSIGHT

Missouri runs on construction, trades and 43 million visitors

Missouri has 579,040 small businesses, 99.5 percent of firms, employing 44.9 percent of workers, per the SBA Office of Advocacy. Construction is the largest group at 68,870, ahead of other services at 66,011 and professional, scientific and technical services at 62,996. The state opened 30,152 establishments and closed 24,302 between March 2022 and March 2023. Contractors and repair trades in those groups compete for the same local searches.

The BLS counts about 2,890,500 covered jobs in March 2026. Seven counties hold 59.6 percent of them: St. Louis County at 584,600, Jackson at 370,500, St. Louis city at 217,200, Greene at 180,600, St. Charles at 161,700, Clay at 108,900 and Boone at 100,400. Visit Missouri's fiscal 2025 study found 43.2 million visitors spent $12.9 billion, and tourism supported one in 27 jobs. Restaurants, lodging and attractions get their customers from out of town, so their reviews and photos decide the booking.

Rankwyre builds websites for Missouri trades and service firms and runs Google and Meta ads aimed at the suburbs and cities where the work is, from St. Charles to Springfield. For shops, online stores start at $499 a month.
