LOCAL INSIGHT

Massachusetts business is packed into nine counties

Massachusetts had 7,154,084 residents in July 2025, a gain of 15,524 or 0.2 percent, after a 1.0 percent jump the year before, according to the UMass Donahue Institute's read of Census estimates. The SBA Office of Advocacy counts 722,819 small businesses in the state, 99.5 percent of all firms, employing 43.9 percent of workers. Professional, scientific and technical services is the biggest group at 124,577 businesses, ahead of construction at 76,901. Owners in those trades are usually compared with a dozen similar firms in the same search, so the site has to state clearly who they serve and where.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 3,552,900 covered jobs in March 2026, down 0.9 percent from a year earlier, across about 296,400 establishments, with an average weekly wage of $2,201. Nine counties hold 92.6 percent of those jobs, from Middlesex at 880,700 workers to Barnstable on Cape Cod and Hampden around Springfield. That density means a customer can pick from many nearby options in one search, so a business that is slow to load or missing from the map pack loses the click.

For Massachusetts owners, Rankwyre builds websites and online stores that load fast on a phone, then sets up Google Maps and local listings so a contractor in Worcester or a shop on the Cape is found by the people searching in that county. Pricing is the same as everywhere else.
