The site is usually slow because of what has been added to it over time, not because of how it was built. Oversized images, tracking scripts from services you stopped using, and fonts loading from somewhere slow. On office wifi none of that is noticeable. On cell data with an average signal it is the difference between a visitor and a bounce.

Turn wifi off on your phone, walk somewhere with an ordinary signal, and load your homepage. Count in your head.
