Do I Need a Website If I Have a Google Business Profile?

Key takeaways

  • A listing flattens every business into the same shape, which favours whoever is cheapest or closest.
  • People now check across roughly six review sites, and Google's share of that has fallen sharply.
  • A website takes the enquiry at 11pm. A phone number does not.
  • The fastest free win is adding your site to your listing and making the phone number match exactly.

Plenty of businesses run for years on a Google listing, a phone number and word of mouth, and do perfectly well. If that is you, this is not an article about how you are doing it wrong.

The short answer

A listing gets you found. It does not get you chosen. If you are mostly competing on being nearby and available, a listing can carry you. If you are competing on being better, more specialised or more expensive than the alternatives, the listing sends people somewhere to decide, and if there is nowhere to send them, they decide with what little they have.

What does a Google listing do well?

It puts you on the map, literally. It carries your hours, your phone number, your reviews and your photos, and for many local searches it is the first and sometimes only thing somebody looks at. There is more on getting the most out of it in our local search playbook.

For an emergency trade, where the search is "open now, near me, answer the phone", it can genuinely be enough. Speed and proximity win those, and a website changes little.

Where does a listing quietly cost me?

In four places, and none of them announce themselves.

When you are not the cheapest. Someone comparing three listings with nothing else to go on will often use price or distance, because that is all they have been given. A listing flattens everyone into the same shape.

When what you do needs explaining. If your work is specialised, or a job varies a lot, or people need to understand why you cost more, there is nowhere on a listing to say so.

When somebody wants to check you are real. People do look for a website, and not finding one is a small signal weighed alongside everything else. Not fatal. Not nothing.

When the enquiry comes at 11pm. A listing sends people to a phone number. A website takes the enquiry while you are asleep and it is waiting in the morning.

Are people even using Google to check me?

Less than they were, and that is the part worth knowing. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, from a representative panel of 1,002 US adults, found consumers now use an average of six different review sites, and that Google's share of review reading fell from 83% in 2025 to 71% in 2026.

You control none of those six. The one destination they all eventually point at is your website, which is the only asset in the chain you own outright.

How do I tell whether I actually need one?

Think about your last ten enquiries. How many chose you because you were nearby and available, and how many chose you because they understood what you do and decided you were right for it?

If it is mostly the first, a listing is doing its job and your money is better spent elsewhere. If it is mostly the second, those people made a decision with information they got from somewhere, and right now that somewhere is a phone call with you, which caps how many can happen in a week.

What is the one free thing I should do today?

Add your website to your listing and make sure the phone number matches exactly. A website does not replace the listing, it finishes the job. The listing is how people find you, the site is where they decide, and businesses that do well locally have both pointed at each other. When the two disagree, Google trusts both a little less, which is also why ongoing search work starts with getting your details consistent everywhere.

FAQs about listings and websites

Can I rank on Google without a website?

Yes, a Google Business Profile can appear in the local map pack on its own. What a listing cannot do is explain your work or take an enquiry outside business hours.

Does having a website help my Google Business Profile?

It helps in two ways. It gives people somewhere to decide once they have found you, and consistent details across both makes Google more confident about your business.

What should match between my listing and my website?

Business name, address and phone number, exactly. Small differences, like an old suite number, make both sources less trusted.

Is a Facebook page enough instead of a website?

It has the same limitation as a listing. You do not control it, you cannot shape how you are presented, and it competes for attention with everything else on the platform.

How much does a basic small business website cost?

Ours start at $299 a month for a rebuild and $399 for a new site, each with a $299 one-time setup. The cost calculator gives you a figure for your own project in under a minute.
