Washington has 8.18 million residents and a tech heavy economy

Washington's population reached 8,176,300 on April 1, 2026, up 61,200 or 0.8 percent in a year, according to the state Office of Financial Management. Since April 2020 it has grown by 469,990, or 6.1 percent, and net migration supplied 72 percent of the latest year's increase. Census data for 2024 to 2025 ranked Washington sixth in numeric growth and seventh in percent growth. More than 69 percent of new housing units went up in the five largest metropolitan counties: Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane. King County alone had 14,160 new units.

The business base leans toward technology and services. Choose Washington State reports tech workers make up 9.4 percent of the workforce, the highest share in the nation, and tech accounts for 21.8 percent of the state economy. The SBA Office of Advocacy counted 695,695 small businesses in 2025, with professional, scientific and technical services the largest group at 113,114. Between March 2023 and March 2024, 24,701 establishments opened and 14,578 closed, a net gain of 10,123. Washington exporters numbered 11,202 firms and shipped $55.5 billion in goods in 2023.
