LOCAL BUSINESS

Who does business in Ohio

Ohio counted 255,049 business locations in 2023, a gain of 455 on the 254,594 from 2022. That is a change of 0.2%, so the state's business base held nearly level while a few sectors moved underneath it.

  1. Retail stores34,27513%
  2. Health care31,16812%
  3. Repair and personal services27,52411%
  4. Restaurants and hospitality25,95210%

Retail stores are the biggest sector at 34,275 locations, 13.4% of the state against 12.5% across the United States. The count slipped by 92 from 2022. We build online stores for shops that want to sell past the front door.

Health care sits at 12.2% here, close to the 12.0% national share, and it added 433 locations in a year. Websites for dental practices are one of the things we build for that group.

Professional services make up 9.3% of Ohio locations, under the 11.8% national share. Education grew fastest, up 3.2% from 3,141 to 3,241, and 48% of locations have under five employees.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Ohio's economy reaches well past Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati

Ohio had about 1.1 million small businesses in the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 profile, employing 2.2 million people, or 43.8 percent of the state's workers. Professional, scientific and technical services leads at 129,656 firms, with transportation and warehousing close behind at 129,272. About 15,594 identified firms exported goods in 2023, and 87.7 percent of them were small. A small manufacturer that sells to buyers in other states needs a site that explains what it makes to a stranger.

The state is trying to grow outside its three big metros. Its $125 million Innovation Hubs program backs a glass and solar hub around Toledo, a digital transformation hub in Dayton tied to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and others in Akron and Youngstown. Tourism matters too: TourismOhio reported 242 million visits and $57 billion in visitor spending plus indirect business sales in 2024, supporting 443,000 jobs. That means an Ohio business may be selling to a factory buyer in Toledo or a visitor planning a trip, and the search terms for each are different.

Rankwyre builds websites for Ohio suppliers and service firms, and SEO that targets the industrial and tourist searches separately. A shop near Dayton or Akron gets pages written for the buyers in its own region.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with Ohio businesses.

Here is how a project with an Ohio business usually goes, from the first conversation to a live site.

  1. Talk first, quote second.

A short call to learn what you sell and who buys it. You get a written price before we touch anything.

  2. Drafts you can react to.

We design and build the site and send previews along the way, so you can change course early.

  3. Showing up when Ohioans search.

We set up your Google Business Profile, local listings and service-area pages so nearby customers can find you.

  4. Live, hosted, looked after.

Launch takes about 7 days for a website. Hosting and updates are included, and we stay available afterward.
