LOCAL INSIGHT

New Haven businesses share a city with Yale

Yale says it is New Haven's largest employer, with nearly 14,000 faculty and staff based in the city, close to 6,000 of them New Haven residents. Its fact sheet lists 15,657 students for 2025, and the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges estimates Yale's overall economic impact at nearly $7 billion a year. Students and visiting families search for places to eat, shop and stay near campus. Nearby businesses need accurate listings and current hours.

Census data via Data USA shows New Haven had 134,349 residents in 2024, with median household income of $56,851. Educational services employs 14,401 residents, health care 11,887 and manufacturing 5,982. Yale says over 90 percent of the tenants in its Community Investment Program have local or regional owners, so independent shops are a real part of the commercial mix. Independent businesses compete with chains and with each other, which makes a distinct, easy to use site a practical way to stand out.

Rankwyre builds websites and online stores for New Haven restaurants, shops, professional offices and health providers, and manages Google Maps and local listings so people near Yale's campus and downtown find the right hours and address. A boutique can sell online, and a dental or law practice can take appointment requests through its site.
