LOCAL INSIGHT

Michigan shops serve residents and 131 million visitors

Michigan has 945,788 small businesses, which are 99.6 percent of its firms and employ 47.4 percent of workers, per the SBA Office of Advocacy. Other services leads at 115,414 businesses, with professional, scientific and technical services at 112,432 and construction at 102,898. Between March 2022 and March 2023 the state added 27,779 establishments and lost 22,202, so new competitors keep appearing in every trade. A business that is not easy to find online gets passed over for the newer listing.

The visitor economy adds a second audience. A Tourism Economics study for Travel Michigan counted 131.2 million visitors in 2024 spending $30.7 billion, supporting 351,292 jobs, about one in 17 in the state. The BLS reports 4,357,500 covered workers in March 2026, and the ten largest counties hold 68.7 percent of them, led by Wayne with 718,100. Outside those counties, a resort, restaurant or outfitter depends on search from people who do not live nearby.

Rankwyre builds Michigan businesses a website that works for both groups, with online stores for those that ship, and runs SEO aimed at the towns and seasons that matter to them. A visitor planning a trip reads reviews and checks hours before arriving, so those listings need to be accurate.

HOW WE WORK

How we work with Michigan businesses.

Here's the order of events when a Michigan business hires us, starting with a conversation and ending with a site that stays current.

  1. Describe it, get a quote.

We hear what you need in a short call, then send the cost in writing. You approve before anything is built.

  2. Drafts on a rolling basis.

As pages are designed and coded, you get previews to react to. A website comes together in about 7 days.

  3. Get listed and located.

Google Business Profile, listings and pages for the areas you serve are set up so customers nearby can find you.

  4. Launch, host, update.

The finished site goes live on our hosting. Updates continue and we answer questions after launch.
