LOCAL INSIGHT
Kentucky's car plants and bourbon distillers pull a long supplier chain behind them
Kentucky's Cabinet for Economic Development says more than 550 companies employ over 106,000 people in automotive work, that automotive exports passed $6 billion in 2025, and that the state is first in cars, light trucks and SUVs per capita. Its top export is aerospace products. The Cabinet also says 95 percent of the world's bourbon supply is made in Kentucky, and that the state has more than 430 food and beverage facilities employing over 58,000 people. Suppliers to those plants are mostly small shops that need buyers to find and vet them online.
The SBA Office of Advocacy counted 393,860 small businesses in Kentucky in 2025, 99.3 percent of the total. Construction is the largest group at 50,958, followed by professional, scientific and technical services at 40,762 and transportation and warehousing at 39,020. In Kentucky, 128,752 small businesses are rural and 221,025 urban. A plant supplier and a roofing company in a smaller county need different pages, one for buyers who compare capabilities and one for homeowners who search a nearby town.
