LOCAL INSIGHT
Indiana added 38,579 people in 2025, and much of the gain came near Indianapolis
Indiana reached 6.97 million residents in 2025 after adding 38,579 people, according to the Indiana Business Research Center, a growth rate of 0.6 percent that ranked 22nd among states. The state's own population table shows 6,785,528 in 2020. Marion County, the most populous, grew by 1,983 residents to 992,196. The SBA Office of Advocacy counts 591,671 small businesses in Indiana, 99.4 percent of the total. Transportation and warehousing is the largest group at 70,480, then construction at 66,189 and professional, scientific and technical services at 64,483.
The SBA also splits Indiana's small businesses into 389,288 urban and 156,244 rural, and 32,461 are Hispanic owned. Retail and administrative services each count more than 50,000 small businesses. Across the state, 480,921 of the 591,671 have no employees. With the population rising slowly and unevenly, a business gains customers by ranking for its own town, not by hoping the metro's growth spills over.
Rankwyre builds websites and web apps and CRMs for Indiana trades, service firms and shops, and Google Maps and local listings that tell a customer in a smaller town the business serves them as well.
