Idaho is adding people faster than most states, and they search before they hire
Idaho's population grew 1.5 percent in 2024, the seventh highest rate in the country, according to the Idaho Department of Labor. The Census Bureau's 2025 estimates, as summarized by Maine's state economist, had Idaho at plus 1.4 percent, still among the three fastest growing states. The SBA Office of Advocacy counts 207,670 small businesses in Idaho in 2025, and construction is the largest group at 27,800, just ahead of professional, scientific and technical services at 27,231. Newcomers don't know which contractor or accountant to call, so they search, and a business with a thin online presence is passed over.
Growth is not evenly spread. The Labor Department's 2024 report points to the Treasure Valley, and it notes a Trader Joe's opening in Coeur d'Alene as the chain's first Idaho store outside that valley, with new retail also going up in Post Falls. The SBA counts 123,050 small businesses in urban areas and 50,138 in rural ones, so rural firms are a real share of the market. Health care accounts for about 15 percent of Idaho jobs, and leisure and retail about 11 percent each. A business in a small town competes in the same search results as one in the city.
